7th Grade Medieval World History Syllabus
Course Description: This course will enable students to gain a more meaningful understanding of world history through inquiry-based instruction that focuses on core concepts found in the social sciences. As a result, students will have the opportunity to not only comprehend the significance that certain events and systems held for people who lived in the distant past, but also gain a greater appreciation and understanding of present-day societies found around the world. Students in my in my 7th grade medieval world history classes will study the time periods between the fall of the Roman Empire through the Age of Enlightenment. Instruction and learning will be guided by the following IB MYP aims for Individuals & Societies (history) courses:

IB Program: The curriculum of this IB MYP course promotes inquiry by developing conceptual understanding within global contexts. Students will be encouraged to explore key concepts related to the study of history such as change, global interactions, time, place and space. The curriculum also promotes investigation into related concepts such as causality, globalization, culture and sustainability. Students will explore these key and related concepts through the following IB MYP global contexts:
IB Assessment Criteria: The assessment criteria that will be used to evaluate the assessment tasks for each unit are grouped into four categories, which are Knowing and Understanding (Criterion A), Investigating (Criterion B), Communicating (Criterion C), and Thinking Critically (Criterion D). Grading & Assignments: Academic grades may be based on a variety of assignments; class notes, reflections, close reading activities, vocabulary, writing assignments, research projects, art pieces, quizzes and exams. We use the IB grading system in our class, which is based on the four assessment criteria explained above. The table below illustrates the correlation between the 8 point IB Criterion-Based grading system and the letter grade your student will receive on their progress reports and report cards.
4 or 7-8 = A = 87 to 100%, Advanced
3 or 5-6 = B = 62 to 86%, Proficient
2 or 3-4 = C = 37 to 61%, Basic
1 or 1-2 = D = 25 to 36%, Below Basic
0 = F = 0 to 24%, Far Below Basic
Citizenship: In order to give each class member equal opportunity and access to the curriculum, all students are expected to follow the classroom expectations and PRIDE expectations.

Class Expectations:
PROMPT: Students are to be on time to class meetings
PREPARED: Students arrive with materials and completed assignments, ready to work
POLITE: Students are respectful towards fellow students and staff
PRODUCTIVE: Students remain focused and on task
Homework Policy & Tutoring: Students will occasionally be assigned work that must be completed independently and returned the following day in class. Time is usually provided to begin working on these assignments in class. Additional help with class assignments is available before or after school Wednesday & Friday by appointment . If a student misses class for any reason, including an unavoidable excused absence, it is the student’s responsibility to make arrangements with me to make up missing assignments.
Progress Reports: Progress reports will be issued every 6 to 7 weeks to keep parents informed of their student’s progress in the course. Academic grades in this class will be based on a student’s performance in the following assignment categories: IB assessments & projects, classwork & homework (accommodations will be made based on individual needs). Citizenship grades will be based on a student’s compliance with the classroom expectations (digital citizenship) and the standards outlined in the Rough Rider Citizenship Rubric.
Power School Portal: Parents may also monitor their child’s academic progress in class more frequently using the Power School Portal online resource, which can be accessed through Roosevelt’s website.
